Sequencing: The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Sorting and sequencing events are very important skills for early readers to learn.  During our unit on butterflies, I did a sequencing activity on a story that many children love, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  With this sorting activity, I wanted the students to sequence the foods that the Hungry Caterpillar ate in order, as well as practice their days of the week. The students found this activity to be very fun because their days of the week turned into the Hungry Caterpillar.

Project Read

The reading curriculum in West Chester Area School District was Project Read.  Throughout my placement, I taught students about the short vowels, blends, sight words, spelling patterns, digraphs, floss words, and the h brothers.  Many of my project read lessons would involve a song, usually Jack Hartmann, a group discussion on words that would have the skill in them, and an activity sheet that I would make where students were able to independently practice the new skill.  It was always exciting when the students would recognize words and say it was an h brother, a floss word, sight word, etc.
